To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the sinking of HMS Naiad in 1942, this year’s reunion will be held on her Tyneside birthplace, at the Copthorne Newcastle, on Friday 13th October, and concluded on Sunday 15th October.
Located in the heart of the city, Copthorne Hotel Newcastle is the perfect base from which to explore. Steps away are interesting shops and restaurants. Art lovers and football fans can stroll to the Theatre Royal and Newcastle United Football Club. From your room, you can enjoy views of the famous bridges over the river. At Quay 7 Restaurant, you can sample delicious British and international fare. The hotel also has a mini-gymnasium.
what events are planned? Meet and Greet | Friday Evening Attendees arrive on Friday afternoon with an informal meet-and-greet hosted in the hotel’s bar, with those who wish to sample the nightlife of the host citywelcome to drift in that direction later.
The AGM | Saturday Morning After breakfast, the Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday morning and a gala dinner the same evening. All are welcome to attend the AGM and the association are particularly happy to see new attendees take part. The meeting discusses the following year’s reunion and the current state of the association. We pride ourselves in being relatively informal so a healthy debate is normal. There will be a book to sign and association memorabilia to buy.
Sightseeing | Saturday Afternoon Once the AGM has been concluded attendees gather at around 11:00hrs for a visit to the local area. This year a visit to HMS Calliopehas been arranged if attendees would like to visit in the afternoon.
Gala Dinner | Saturday Evening This year will be different from previous years in that we will be using HMS Calliope Wardroom for our Saturday night Gala Dinner (19:00-midnight). In line with the protocol adhered to on our previous reunion in Devonport (HMS Drake) we will be required to submit all attendees names to allow main gate access. Drinks at the bar are no more than £2.50 for a short with mixer and the menu will be promulgated in due course once it has been agreed with the chef - who has over 16 years experience in Calliope wardroom.
We will hold a small raffle to raise money for the association and good causes, in particular our adopted charity, the RBL care home at Galanos House.
Farewell | Sunday Morning After breakfast attendees are free to set off homeward bound. There is no formal gathering on Sunday but many of us have shared journeys home so gather before heading towards the train or coach station; or our cars.
how much does it cost? Costs depend on what type of accommodation you would prefer, but will be inclusive of 2 nights bed & breakfast, Gala Dinner and free drinks.
